Wireless Access Points

In today's connected world, fast and reliable Wi-Fi is no longer a luxury - it's a necessity. A Wireless Access Point (WAP) is a dedicated device that creates a high-performance wireless local area network (WLAN) for your home, business, or venue. Unlike an all-in-one router, an access point is designed to add powerful Wi-Fi capabilities to an existing wired network, allowing you to create a scalable system with seamless coverage. Omada offers a complete range of centrally managed wireless access points built to deliver superior performance, reliability, and ease of use.

Why Choose an Omada Wireless Access Point?

Omada access points are more than just hardware; they are part of a powerful, software-defined networking (SDN) platform that gives you total control.

  • Centralized Management: Configure, manage, and monitor all your access points from a single dashboard, accessible from anywhere in the world via the Omada app or a web browser.
  • Seamless Roaming: Omada ensures users can move freely throughout your property without dropping their connection. Devices automatically and seamlessly switch to the access point with the strongest signal.
  • PoE Powered: All Omada access points are powered over a single Ethernet cable (PoE), simplifying installation and eliminating the need for a nearby power outlet.
  • Cutting-Edge Technology: Stay ahead of the curve with the latest wireless standards, including the powerful efficiency of Wi-Fi 6 and the revolutionary speed of Wi-Fi 7.
  • Versatile Form Factors: Whether you need discreet in-wall units, powerful ceiling-mounted APs, flexible desktop models, or rugged outdoor options, Omada has a purpose-built access point for any deployment scenario.

How to Choose the Right Wireless Access Point？

Selecting the perfect model depends on your environment, performance needs, and budget. Here’s a breakdown of the key factors to consider.

By Wi-Fi Standard: Wi-Fi 6 vs. Wi-Fi 7

  • Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) Access Points: The current standard for excellence. A Wi-Fi 6 access point is perfect for most modern homes and businesses, offering higher speeds, greater capacity, and better performance in congested environments compared to previous generations.
  • Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) Access Points: The future of wireless, available today. A Wi-Fi 7 access point delivers unprecedented multi-gigabit speeds, ultra-low latency, and interference-free performance. It is the ultimate choice for the most demanding environments, such as tech-forward offices, venues, and future-proof smart homes.

By Form Factor and Location

  • Ceiling Mount Access Points: The most popular choice for professional installations. These units are designed to be mounted on the ceiling for optimal, widespread overhead coverage in offices, classrooms, and large open spaces.
  • Wall Plate Access Points: Designed for discreet, in-room installations. These access points fit into a standard data wall outlet, providing excellent coverage for a single room, such as a hotel room, dorm, or individual office.
  • Outdoor Access Points: Built with durable, weatherproof enclosures, an outdoor access point is engineered to withstand the elements while providing excellent Wi-Fi coverage to backyards, patios, pool areas, and outdoor event spaces.
  • Desktop Access Points: Offering ultimate flexibility, our desktop model like the EAP650-Desktop is designed to be placed on any flat surface. This makes it a perfect fit for home offices, small retail stores, or any space where ceiling mounting isn't practical, but you still need enterprise-grade Wi-Fi performance.

By Coverage Pattern: Omnidirectional vs. Directional

  • Area Coverage (Omnidirectional): Most access points provide 360-degree area coverage, much like a light bulb illuminates a room. This is ideal for covering open spaces like offices, backyards, and common areas where users will be connecting from all directions.
  • Directional Coverage (Directional): For specific scenarios, a Directional Access Point is the superior choice. It focuses the Wi-Fi signal into a concentrated beam—like a spotlight—to cover long, narrow areas or provide a targeted signal over a greater distance. This is perfect for warehouses, long hallways, stadiums, or outdoor event seating. Models like the EAP650 D30-Outdoor (narrow 30° beam) and EAP650 D120-Outdoor (wider 120° beam) are designed for this precise, high-performance coverage.

From the ultra-fast speeds of Wi-Fi 7 to rugged outdoor models, Omada has a wireless access point to power any network. Explore our full collection to find the perfect solution for your connectivity needs.

FAQs

What is the difference between a wireless access point and a router?

A router is an all-in-one device that connects your local network to the internet and often includes a built-in switch and wireless access point. A dedicated wireless access point is a device that only handles Wi-Fi; it usually will be connected to a router or switch to provide internet access. Using dedicated APs allows you to build a much larger and more scalable network.

How many access points do I need?

The number of access points depends on the size of your space, the construction materials (e.g., concrete walls block more signal than drywall), and the number of devices you need to support. A proper wireless site survey is recommended for large deployments, but for smaller areas, starting with one central AP is a good approach.

Do all access points need to be connected with an Ethernet cable?

For the best performance, yes. Each access point should be connected back to your main network switch with an Ethernet cable (which also provides power via PoE). However, Omada access points also support Mesh technology, which allows them to wirelessly connect to each other, providing a great solution for areas where running a cable isn't possible.

Can I install a ceiling mount access point on the wall?

Yes, all Omada ceiling mount access points can be installed on the wall with the wall mounting kits.
