I’ve been running the TP-Link Omada SG3428X-M2 as my core switch for about a month now, and it has been rock-solid. If you are on the fence about stepping up your home network or small business infrastructure from standard gigabit, this is the hardware to do it with.The biggest win for me has been shifting the network backbone from 1Gbps up to 2.5Gbps. The difference is night and day, especially when pushing heavy data loads across multi-gigabit NAS setups, servers, and heavy traffic segments. Has been rock solid so far. Excellent transfer rates for the 3 2.5Gb devices on my network. Excellent burst rates.
This switch fits perfectly in the Omada Controller and does everything you want it to. Its small, light and performs amazing for its price range - especially if you get in on a deal or trade up program.
However, I believe this is a "fanless" model, even though I do see what looks like a fan on the right side. This thing gets HOT, that right side on the bottom is almost too hot to touch. I dont know if this is a defective unit, or if its supposed to have a fan and just doesnt?
Regardless, I have been working with enterprise level switches for a while and I would gladly trade a little noise from a single fan that deal with the heat this thing kicks out.
Been using switch for the last week, extremely powerful and very quiet
I needed a managed switch that would allow me to upgrade to multigigabit (2.5Gb). This switch advertised static routing, 2.5Gb, 4 x 10Gb SFP+, and IPv6 capabilities. I wanted to use the switch for all intervlan routing. Well, turns out you can't if you want to use IPv6. This switch has no ability to send out RAs, so IPv6 routing is only possible if you statically assign EVERYTHING. DHCP6 or SLAAC? Nope, this switch isn't for you.
So, I had to redesign my network layout and essentially just turn this switch into a 'dumb' L2 switch. Could've saved money purchasing a different L2 switch if I'd known this switch doesn't support ALL IPv6 features. Tech support (before sales) was also useless. Don't expect them to know anything more than what you can read for yourself on the website.
Also, you can't configure this switch manually and then import it into your omada controller without it going sideways on you. I had to use a separate console cable (the one included is useless since it's a DB9 serial cable we all stopped using over a decade ago). For now it's just managed as a standalone since I can't trust the process of importing into my omada controller.
I'm quite disappointed in the experience but will continue to use the switch since it still provides me quiet, multigigabit networking. TP-Link really has a way to go for improvements.
